Poland – Warsaw and Around… (I)

Entering Poland

On completing the ‘T‘, we wasted no time getting the van over the Lithuania-Poland border. This milestone marked the 14th border crossing of our trip so far! Once across, we pushed straight on to Warsaw…

Route from Lithuania to Warsaw

Polish Border

After a relatively pain free drive into the Polish capital, we parked up in the shadow of Warsaw’s Palace of Culture and Science. The Andy & Katy research machine was, by now, well practised at finding the best spots in town. As a result, it wasn’t long before we found a hotel for the night and hatched a plan for the evening…

Another Night Out

As darkness fell, we took a taxi into the city’s Old Town. The area is a bustling tourist hub, with cobblestone alleys and medieval buildings reconstructed after WWII.

The Old Town at night

We had the pleasure of visiting Warsaw on a Saturday night. Bars and restaurants were packed, the atmosphere buzzing. After inspecting the main sights and sinking a few cold ones, we headed to Krakowskie Przedmieście Street. The warm weather mean’t there were plenty of people eating and drinking out on the street. We got chatting to some Greeks and picked their brains for tips and ideas for our upcoming visit. All in all, it was a lovely evening.

Reflecting on the day’s events, we decided that you really need a long weekend to do this city justice. One night was simply not enough. In our drunken haze, Katy and I both agreed that we would return.

Dotting the i

The next morning, we struggled out of bed before wandering around The Palace of Culture and Science. Up close, it really is magnificent. Constructed in 1955, it is the centre for various companies, public institutions and concerts alike.

With a refreshing palace walk under the belt, we gobbled down a couple of ice creams (in an attempt to sooth our respective hangovers) and departed Warsaw.

I needed to draw a complete circle to finish the top of the lowercase ‘i’. In order to achieve this, we set off clockwise from the Capital. The route took us through Ciechanowiec, Siemiatycze, Pulway and Radom before closing the loop back where we started in Warsaw.

Circling in Poland

Circle complete, we nipped back down to Radom and continued south to The Sieradowice Landscape Park – a protected area in south-central Poland. We parked up on the edge of a beautiful lake and set up camp for the evening. We were now poised to head south through Slovakia and Romania…
