The journey to the Portuguese border from Vigo was another beautiful drive. We meandered our way over Parque Natural do Monte Aloia, crossed the river Minho and entered Portugal. It was a huge milestone for us. 27 countries down, we were now on the final stretch and able to enjoy our last few weeks on the road.
Our 27th and final country
Our chosen route involved driving down Portugal’s Silver Coast towards Lisbon. We would then go on to meet some friends (Manel and Pedro) in Setúbal…
500 kms down
These two legends welcomed us into their incredible campsite (Astrolodge) and showed us some of the area’s best hidden gems:
Palácio da Comenda
Now abandoned and rundown, Palácio da Comenda was once a prestigious palace on the European coast, having hosted Portuguese royalty, French aristocracy, and the First Family of the U.S.

Visitors can investigate the abandoned palace: climb to the top for spectacular coastal views and enjoy the impressive graffiti on the way up.

Setubal's Abandoned Fort - 7° Bataria de Outão
The drive up here was certainly worth it. We enjoyed stunning views of estuary as the sun slowly set over the mountains behind.

The Cave of Santa Margarida - Portinho da Arrabid
This hidden cave is accessed via a narrow track that descends towards the ocean. Another great recommendation from local legends Pedro and Manel!

We had a lovely time at Astrolodge and even survived an encounter with the remnants of Hurricane Leslie… Love you guys.

After enjoying a ‘holiday within a holiday’ with Pedro and Manel, it was soon time to say goodbye and continue drawing our final GPS letter.
Route to The Algarve
We departed Setubal and blasted South towards The Algarve. Acting on the guy’s advice, we camped on the coast around Praia da Figueira (somewhere on the road to Sagres). This coastline was different again, with bright blues, greens and oranges. We hiked and explored with Betty, swam in the ocean and really enjoyed our last few days in Portugal. Next stop, Cadiz.
